Main Topic

Welcome to our 100th episode of the Retro Disney World Podcast. For this special live edition, we took some time to look back on RetroMagic — our most recent event in Florida celebrating the history, stories, and people behind Walt Disney World.

It’s hard to believe it had only been about five weeks since we wrapped up the event, because the whole weekend already felt like a blur of presentations, reunions, backstage stories, and late-night conversations with friends old and new. This episode really became less of a formal recap and more of a chance for all of us to reconnect and relive some of our favorite moments together.

We talked about the incredible support from everyone who attended, volunteered, presented, or helped behind the scenes. Thanks to all of you, RetroMagic was one of the smoothest and most rewarding events we’ve ever put together.

One of the biggest highlights of the weekend was our VIP evening at the Living Seas pavilion at EPCOT. Between the private viewing area for the nighttime spectacular, backstage stories from former Imagineers, and the opportunity to spend meaningful time with guests like Kym Murphy, Tony Baxter, Jim McCaskill, and others, it turned into a genuinely emotional and memorable night for everyone involved.

Kym Murphy’s presence throughout the weekend was especially meaningful to us. Given some of the medical challenges he’s faced recently, it was incredibly special to have him there sharing stories about the creation of Living Seas Pavilion and Typhoon Lagoon. Seeing him reconnect with fellow Imagineers — and seeing how much the audience appreciated him — was one of those moments that reminded us why we do these events in the first place.

We also revisited several of the presentations from the weekend, including:

  • Our deep dive into the Main Street Penny Arcade and vintage mechanical music machines
  • Rare Disney documentation and archival material presented by Ted Linhart
  • Stories about Typhoon Lagoon’s development and the creation of Typhoon Tilly
  • Opening day Walt Disney World cast and crew stories
  • Behind-the-scenes Imagineering anecdotes that ranged from heartfelt to completely absurd

As always, there were plenty of unexpected tangents — from discussing whether Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz are basically the same story, to trying to remember the actual name of the famous Jewfish from the Seas pavilion (it’s Orson, apparently, not Norman).

We also spent some time talking about the rare historical material featured during the event. Ted Linhart once again brought an incredible collection of Disney documents, concept art, operational reports, and development material that most fans never get the opportunity to see in person. If you’re interested in Disney history at that level of detail, it’s an unbelievable rabbit hole to fall into.
