WordPress Tutorials
Here are some various tutorials on WordPress to hopefully make the transition easier. This may look like a huge list, but it’s short videos briefly explaining each section of the parts of WordPress you’ll commonly come in contact with on a regular basis.
The WordPress Dashboard
Content
Posts vs. Pages
99% of our content is in the 'Post' format.
Creating/Editing Posts
The Post Creation Interface
The Editor Interface
Our editor looks a little bit different from the videos shown here. We have some additional and custom features enabled just for our site (like the podcast short code). As we use the site more we can add commonly repeated tasks to this editor as needed.
Publishing & The Publish Panel
Post Formats
Podcasts are an 'Audio' Post format, Videos are 'Video', all others should be in the default, 'Standard' format.
Categories & Tags
Assign posts to only one category if possible. Podcasts go in the 'Podcast' category, general posts go in the 'Retro Disney World' category. If an appropriate category doesn't exist, ask Todd or Jason before creating one as we may already be planning a new category structure that would incorporate your needed new category.
Try to use an existing tag before creating a new one. Type slowly and WP will search the existing tags and try to find matching tags.
Because tags are useful for users to find more content related to a specific subject, try to use terms that succinctly summarize the post content subjects you are currently writing. Users can find all content tagged with a specific tag by clicking on a tag's name in a tag listing. This makes it easy to find all content related to a specific tag/concept. We have to manually tag each article but it allows for a more refined & curated search and not a barrage of blind simple text searching that the site search function utilizes.
Featured Images
Make sure your image is AT LEAST 700x700 pixels. Smaller images will cause it to display incorrectly on the site.
When uploading an image, please fill in the Title, Alt Text & Description box. These are useful later for when we search the media library for images to use in articles and Search Engine Optimization (looking good in Google). Typically the Title & Alt Text can be the same.
Creating a Post
For how we format our articles, see the following help pages: Typography & Podcast Postings.
