This is the first of what will be an ongoing series posts of random things that I did back in the early 1990s (I was barely in my 20s) when I wanted to pursue a career at Walt Disney Imagineering. Some of it is OK(?), some of it is terrible. My hope is that others who want to go into the themed entertainment industry can learn from my mistakes. Even through I didn’t ultimately get a job at WDI, I have a very fulfilling career and use many of the skills that I developed during these creative explorations. All is not lost if you never get to Flower Street!
This piece dates from sometime around 1990-1991, before I had any knowledge that Kevin Rafferty (?) was working on a show that would debut in November of 1993 that would restore the World’s Fair/Disneyland “It’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” song and heavily change the tone of the show.
My experience had always been with the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction and therefore my goal was to make the kind of mild updates to the fourth act that I had seen in done before 1985. The writing was done with the following ideals in mind:
- Set the 4th act in the mid-1980s permanently to maintain the roughly 20-year progression between acts
- Use 1980s technology to create nostalgic humor for audiences that lived during that time, in the same way that audiences at the 1964 World’s Fair likely found the 1900s scenes funny
- Payoff the progression of women in society a bigger way
- Add callbacks to earlier parts of the show and references to earlier versions
I think my favorite part of the script was the inclusion of Star Wars into the show. Who could have predicted that 25 years later, Disney would own it?
